Traditional Dentures vs. Implant-Supported Dentures
When it comes to restoring your smile after tooth loss, two popular options are traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures. At KRAV Esthetics Dental in Bedford, TX, we’re committed to helping you make the best choice for your lifestyle, oral health, and personal preferences. Below, we’ll compare these two options to give you a clearer understanding of their benefits, differences, and considerations.
What Are Traditional Dentures?
Traditional dentures are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth. They rest directly on the gums and are held in place by suction, adhesives, or a combination of both. Dentures can be either full (replacing all teeth in the upper or lower arch) or partial (replacing a few missing teeth while fitting around your natural teeth).
Advantages of Traditional Dentures:
Affordability: Traditional dentures are often less expensive than implant-supported options.
Non-Invasive: No surgery is required for fitting traditional dentures.
Quick Solution: Dentures can typically be fabricated and fitted within weeks.
Adjustability: They can be adjusted or relined to accommodate changes in your gums and jaw structure.
Challenges of Traditional Dentures:
Stability: Without implants, traditional dentures may shift or slip during eating or speaking.
Bone Loss: Over time, the jawbone can shrink due to lack of stimulation, causing changes in fit.
Adhesive Dependence: Many patients rely on adhesives for a more secure fit.
Reduced Bite Strength: Chewing certain foods may be more challenging.

What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures combine the functionality of dental implants with the convenience of dentures. Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to act as artificial tooth roots. Once healed, these implants provide a stable foundation for dentures, which can either snap onto the implants (removable option) or be permanently fixed (non-removable option).
Advantages of Implant-Supported Dentures:
Enhanced Stability: Implants secure the dentures in place, eliminating slipping and improving confidence.
Preservation of Jawbone: Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure.
Improved Functionality: Patients often experience better chewing efficiency and a more natural feel.
Longevity: With proper care, dental implants can last decades, providing a durable solution.
Esthetic Appeal: Implant-supported dentures fit snugly and naturally, enhancing your smile’s appearance.
Challenges of Implant-Supported Dentures:
Cost: The initial investment is higher than traditional dentures.
Surgical Procedure: Implant placement requires minor surgery and healing time.
Time Commitment: The entire process, including healing, can take several months.
Eligibility: Patients need sufficient jawbone density for implant placement; bone grafting may be necessary in some cases.
Mini Implants Overdenture
Ideal for patients with medical, anatomical or financial limitations. Mini Implant Overdentures offer patients improved stability and function. They allow patients who have narrow ridges or aren’t able to undergo bone grafting procedures to experience the benefits of implant treatment through a minimally invasive surgical protocol.
For ideal results, our denture is delivered in conjunction with Inclusive® Mini Implants, which are self-tapping, threaded titanium implants available in 2.2 mm, 2.5 mm and 3.0 mm diameters.
Locator® Implants Overdenture
Locator Implant overdentures are recommended for patients who desire a more stable removable prosthesis that improves retention, function and speech. For patients who desire a palateless maxillary denture (upper arch), implant overdentures can be fabricated in the shape of a horseshoe, addressing patient issues with comfort, speech and taste.
Locator Overdentures are delivered over at least two implants, are most common in the mandible, are supported by the soft tissue and can be removed by the patient for cleaning.
This removable implant solution is recommended when the patient doesn’t have enough bone volume to support the number of implants in the correct positions needed to provide adequate anterior-posterior (Front-Back) spread for a fixed restoration.
Locator® Implants Fixed Prosthesis
The Locator® Fixed Prosthesis offers a simple, efficient means of providing fully edentulous patients with a fixed implant restoration. Using the same Locator abutment and attachment technology, the Locator Fixed Prosthesis allows you to restore your patients' dental function, confidence and smile with ease.
Unlike the Locator Implant Overdenture, the Locator Fixed Prosthesis is designed to stay in position using Locator technology and cannot be removed by the patient. Supported by at least four implants, the Locator Fixed Prosthesis gives patients the confidence to smile and ability to chew food and speak with ease.
Which Option is Right for You?
Choosing between traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures depends on several factors:
Budget: Traditional dentures are a cost-effective solution for many patients, while implants are a long-term investment.
Lifestyle: Implant-supported dentures offer greater stability and functionality for an active lifestyle.
Oral Health: Bone density and gum health play a critical role in implant eligibility.
Aesthetic Goals: For a more natural look and feel, implant-supported dentures often excel.
